The Fifteen Minute Hamlet

by Tom Stoppard

The Fifteen Minute Hamlet had 1 performance almost 20 years ago (on the 3rd of July 2004) at The Magna Carta Theatre

Stoppard's interpretation reduces Shakespeare's most complex work to its bare bones. whilst keeping the original language it tells a simple story where Hamlet meets the ghost of his dead father, discovers that his uncle has murdered his father for the throne of Denmark, cunningly gathers evidence to this fact by forcing his uncle to watch a play that recreates the events of the murder and then takes a bloody revenge. The speed at which the play is performed and the stage direction creates a farcical piece that is full of great comic moments. Unusually for Stoppard most of the humour and the acting are very physical and this play demands a highly energised and physical cast.

Original

Hamlet - Nick Lund

The only "straight" part in the play. Played in a very serious style, contrasting the supposed madness of Hamlet within the play to the clear madness of the actors around him.

Person small1

Ophelia - Nancy Lund

Hamlet's love. Ophelia is at different points in the play love-struck, disgusted, mad and dead. A strong physical presence.

Person small1

Gertrude - Gillian Smithies

Hamlet's mother and Queen of Denmark. Stately and controlled but with some amusing and farcical scenes.
