The Spasm
by Tony Best, based on the short story by Guy de Maupassant
The Spasm had 2 performances about 10 years ago (between the 14th of October 2014 and the 23rd of October 2014) at Riverside Arts Centre
This is the first production by the new venture of giving opportunities for presenting drama by our younger members aged between 13 and 21. Nancy Lund, a qualified drama therapist, is giving a opportunity for our teenage members to work together on a piece of theatre to enter into local drama festivals. We hope this will be the first of many productions.
The Spasm is loosely based on Guy de Maupassant's short story of the same name. However, that story is firmly placed on Earth and there are no 'post-death' scenes. The chorus of demons act like a Greek chorus, with 'choric odes' occurring between acts as would occur in Greek theatre. Also, towards the ennd of the play the chorus begin to take more of a part in the action.
