The Memory of Water
by Shelagh Stephenson
The Memory of Water had 4 performances almost 23 years ago (between the 28th of November 2001 and the 1st of December 2001)
This blackly comic astringent play premiered at Hampstead Theatre in 1996. It was winner of the Lawrence Olivier Award for Best Comedy.
Three sisters gather on the eve of their mother's funeral. Buried secrets, shared memories and bitter resentments emerge, making for an experience of contrasting delights for audience and cast. As the conflicts of the past converge, everyday lies and tensions revela the particular patterns and strains of human relationships.
The themes are those of memories, nostalgia and family relationships and resentments.
